Ricardo Tanturi: history, style and music for dancing tango

Simple, elegant, and profoundly milonguero tango

In Argentine tango, not all orchestras seek musical complexity or grand orchestral effects.
Ricardo Tanturi's strength lies precisely in his simplicity.

His music is clear, orderly, and natural.
A tango designed for the dance floor, for embrace, and for the pleasure of dancing.

This is why Tanturi is still considered one of the most "milonguero" orchestras in the history of Argentine tango.

Who was Ricardo Tanturi?

Ricardo Tanturi was born in Buenos Aires in 1905.
He was a pianist, conductor, and one of the protagonists of the golden age of Argentine tango.

His orchestra achieved enormous popularity, especially in the 1940s, thanks to its style:

  • Very danceable
  • Rhythmically clear
  • Elegant yet accessible

Much of the success of his orchestra is also linked to the singers who accompanied him, in particular:

  • Alberto Castillo

  • Enrique Campos

With Castillo, the orchestra had a more lively and theatrical character.
With Campos, it became more romantic and melodic.

Tanturi's musical style

Tanturi's style is based on balance.

His orchestra is not:

    • Aggressive

    • Dramatic

    • Too sophisticated

    • Nor excessively slow

    • Dance

    • Walking Connection within the couple

      Everything is designed to foster:

    • Dance

    • Walking

    • Connection within the couple

Its main features are:

  • Clear rhythm
  • Simple phrasing
  • Understated elegance
  • Immediate musicality

It is a direct, sincere tango that is very pleasant to listen to and dance to.

The rhythmic characteristics

Ricardo Tanturi always maintains a stable and easily readable pulse.

His orchestra focuses heavily on:

  • regular markings
  • rhythmic clarity
  • fluidity
  • musical continuity

We don't find the dramatic pauses of Osvaldo Pugliese nor the intense speed of Juan D'Arienzo.

Tanturi instead creates a tango:

  • Balanced
  • Natural
  • Comfortable for the track

Tanturi and tango for dancers

For many tango dancers, Tanturi is one of the easiest and most enjoyable conductors to dance to.

His music invites you to:

  • Walk comfortably

  • Maintain a natural rhythm

  • Dance socially

  • Emphasize embraces over complex figures

It is a type of orchestra widely used in traditional milongas because:

  • It doesn't tire
  • It doesn't create excessive tension
  • It always maintains great danceabilit

For many dancers it represents the true spirit of Argentine social tango.
