Aníbal Carmelo Troilo, known as “Pichuco”(Buenos Aires, July 11, 1914 – May 18, 1975), was one of the greatest musicians in Argentine tango history. A bandoneón master, orchestra leader, and composer, he gave tango an unmistakable sound filled with passion and nostalgia. Today, his music is considered a universal heritage of tango.
Troilo was born in a working-class neighborhood of Buenos Aires. At just 10 years old, his mother gave him his first bandoneón, and by the age of 11 he was already playing in local groups. His nickname Pichucostayed with him for life, becoming almost synonymous with his music.
In the 1930s, Troilo performed with several orchestras until, in 1937, he founded his own orquesta típica. With it, he quickly conquered audiences in milongas and on the radio. His music blended melodic refinementwith emotional depth, while always preserving tango’s traditional essence.
Troilo transformed the bandoneón into a true human voice, capable of expressing longing, melancholy, and deep emotion.
His orchestra was one of the most beloved of the Golden Age of tango, with warm and elegant arrangements, equally suited for both listening and dancing.

Troilo was loved not only as a musician but also as a humble and generous person, deeply connected with ordinary people.
It is said that he was not a strong reader of music notation but played everything “by heart”, guided by instinct and feeling.
His long collaboration with singer Francisco Fiorentinomade his orchestra even more iconic.
Troilo remains a central figure in the history of Argentine tango. His way of playing the bandoneón continues to inspire musicians, while his recordings are essential in milongas across the world. His music is the very sound of Buenos Aires’ soul.
Aníbal Troilo was more than a bandoneón player; he was the very voice of tango. His music lives on, moving dancers and listeners alike, generation after generation.
