At the origins of Argentine tango we find the canyengue dance, around 1890. Quick and short movements (arraballero) are typical. Supplanted in the forties. The milonguero style is characterized by a tight embrace and contained movements suitable for confined spaces. A sober, simple and passionate style. Dancers often lean on each other and the individual axis is replaced by a shared axis around which the couple moves.

Tango is a dance based on improvisation, characterized by elegance and passion. The basic step of the tango is the step itself, where by step we mean the normal step of a walk. The dance position is a more or less asymmetrical frontal embrace, depending on the style, in which the man with the right hugs the back of his dancer and with the left holds her hand, thus creating a greater distance between the left shoulder of the man and the right hand of the woman.
Tango dance. A few simple rules dictate the limits of improvisation: the man leads, the woman follows. Basically it is the man who asks in a purely body language to his dancer to move. However, for educational reasons, sequences with predefined steps have been introduced, such as the basic Salida.
Argentine tango is characterized by three different musical rhythms which correspond to as many distinct types of dance: Tango, Milonga and Tango Vals (Vals criollo). Musically the Tango has a 4/4 or 2/4 tempo, like the Milonga. The Tango Vals which, like all waltzes, has a time of 3/4, is danced over 4 bars.
The tango dancers practice different styles, to dance tango, headed by great performers of its historical phases, or to the neighborhoods of Buenos Aires or towns in its vicinity, where they have distinguished themselves. Some Argentine tango dance styles are: Apilado, Milonguero tango, fantasia tango, tango salòn, tango show, tango estilo Avellaneda, tango estilo Villa Urquiza, and also the neo tango or tango nuevo.
Among the most famous tango dancers should be mentioned José Benito Ovidio Bianquet known as "El Cachafaz", Alejandro Aquino first and only dancer of the legendary Osvaldo Pugliese Orchestra, Osvaldo Zotto or Carlos Gavito known for having introduced a typical "unbalanced" hug (apilado) , Gustavo Naveira who with Fabian Salas and Pablo Veron are at the basis of the evolution of modern tango, Mariano "Chicho" Frumboli known for its modern style and spectacular steps (such as the 2-legged sacada).
